My brother in law Eric picked Oscar's name and I thought it was perfect for him.
I took Oscar to his first vet check up and the vet told me that Oscar actually had a previous owner a few weeks prior who had named him Baby. They had returned him to the pet shop as they decided a puppy wasn't right for them.
Oscar was such a loving energetic little puppy. I lost count of the number of shoes Oscar decided to snack on although one look at his little face and I couldn't be mad at him.
Oscar's early years were spent living with myself, my cat Jetson and my wonderful friend Charmaine at Bertram Street Chatswood. We would often take Oscar away for weekends to Nelsons Bay. There he loved to run along the sand and dig wholes. He never seemed to like the water although he loved being out on the boat with the wind going through his hair. Afterwards I would wash Oscar and we would sit in the afternoon sun relaxing while I brushed Oscar's hair and let the sun dry it naturally.
Oscar took a liking to Charmaine's toes, as soon as Charms would come home and take her shoes off Oscar would lick her feet and become obsessed with them, it was all very weird. One day we came up with a plan to put a bit of pepper on Charms feet to see if this would deter Oscar. It worked and he never licked her feet again.
I met my husband Joel in 2004. Joel and Oscar became best friends from that day on. We soon realised that Oscar was getting bored during the day while we were at work and it would be a great idea to get another puppy for Oscar to play with.
Oscar and his new baby sister Paris soon became best friends. Paris would follow Oscar everywhere. They would run and play for hours together, then fall asleep snugged up to each other on the lounge.
In 2006 Joel and I bought a house in West Ryde. Oscar and Paris were so excited to have a large backyard to run around in. Jetson my cat had never really warmed to Oscar and now with another puppy to deal with, I think the stress was too much for him. Jetson went 'walk about' and decided that the neighbour's house a few streets away was much more relaxing so he set up home there. I brought him back a few times but each time he just left again. In the end I decided to let him go in the hope that one day he might return. He still hasn't!
Charmaine was our regular animal baby sitter. When ever we would go on holidays, Charms would mind the dogs. They loved Charms so much and she loved them as well.
In Sept 2008 Joel and I were on a holiday in Mexico. Joel received a call from Charms on his mobile phone. Poor Charms had to relay the horrible news that Oscar had passed away. I was in shock and all I could think about was poor Paris and how lonely and upset she would be.
Oscar had passed away from liver stones. We were not even aware he had them. Poor Charms had returned home and found Oscar on the floor with Paris laying beside him. Oscar had already passed away.
After much crying and sleepless nights, Joel and I decided we needed to get another puppy to try to help Paris deal with the lose of her brother, Paris had never been on her own before. I got on the internet and found a wonderful breeder who had a 3 month old Cavoodle available. Joel and I cut our holiday short and came home to be with Paris and pick up our new puppy.
Paris has never really gotten over losing her best friend, she is a lot quieter now, however she does seem happier these days and enjoys playing with her new friend Tito.
Sadly my wonderful friend Charmaine passed away on 28th Feb 09 and I know that Oscar would have been waiting for Charms in Heaven.
I think of them every day and will miss them every day until we meet again.
