My Story

I found Sylvie and Thomas (her 'brother' by adoption) at the RSPCA when i was looking for a dog. In the previous year I had had two pet cats run over and was far to heartbroken for another. However, me being me, that is, impulsive and a mad animal lover, especially cats, and dogs, and anything not slimy or scary really, I couldn't help but go past the kitten enclosure where, as luck would have it, there was about a million kittens all awaiting adoption. I thought 'I'll just go in, just for a minute', and low and behold, an hour later i walked out with a tiny blackish ball of fluff (that had attached itself to me and started purring the second i walked in) and a slightly larger, orange and white ball of fluff (Thomas, sitting on my armchair, unawares his sis has recently expired).

Shortly after their adoption, Sylvie, Thomas and I moved into my new house, in the northern burbs of Melbourne, where my brother built a large and crazy enclosure so they could not get out on the road (It was rather a busy road), which had a tunnel leading into the house. Ironic, in retrospect. Sylvie was an escape artist though, and I spent many a night enticing her back inside with food when she had managed another Houdini, and gotten outside, usually by zipping past me on my way in our out. They led a very cosy life, and were only occasionally upset by a new aquisition - Joey, a small dog about four  years later, and two newbies earlier this year; Fergus (another dog, a very energetic whippet) and of course, Little Miss.

Little Miss never got a real name, still hasn't. She was discovered a few streets from my house when walking Joey and Fergus one day. Apparantly she'd been there a while, despite being tiny, maybe 5 or 6 weeks old. I managed to coerse her into a cat cage that I went a fetched from home, with some cold meat, and proceeded to search for a new home for her, as two cats and two dogs was quite enough! A new home never eventuated though, and she bossed and hissed and meowed her way into my home (and heart) and into Sylvie's too, Thomas still merely tolerates her. Kind of like two housemates being civil, but not terribly big fans of one another.

Sylvie and Little Miss got along quite well, sometimes they fought, but other times they would snuggle and wash each other. The funny thing about Little Miss, is that she really looked like a product of Thomas and Sylvie. She too, was tortoisshell, but with ginger and white on her coat, Personality wise, she is alot like Sylvie was, kinda mad, independant, smoochy and very very playful in a slightly psychotic sort of way. Thomas is the docile one of the brood. Anyway, I called Sylvie her mum.
They both have or had the softest hair, big starey eyes, and a love of my bed.
Sylvies eyes were insane really, giant yellow saucers, that would turn into giant black saucers when she was in one of her mischeivoiously insane moods.

Anyway, recently we moved to the country, as I got a new job (also ironically I have recently been usurped by a cheap replacement, bloody contracts!) and was probably heading back to Melbourne, and back to the cat enclousure for my babies, where they couldnt get run over), where Sylvie, now 7 years old, was tonight, run over by a pair of coppers.

I've never been a huge fan of cops, with some warped reasoning of my own, and of course it wasn't at all their fault, and they were super sorry and nice about it, but this stupid sense of worry and foreboding, I had when i caved and started letting them outside when I moved her, as I didn't have a cat enclousure has panned out the same as those two I lost 8 years ago. Sylvie died instantly, which makes it a little easier to bear, and my kind mum did the honours and buried her where the dogs can't dig her up, despite the fact it was very wet out and dark too.
So, to a much beloved cat, in some ways my favorite due to her bizarre mood swings and giant yellow eyes, and her very odd way of meowing when i patter her or she wanted something, I love you girl, and you will be very very much missed.
